If it keeps your food cold, your clothes clean, or your dinner cooked, chances are I've repaired hundreds of them:
Two brands I avoid and will tell you so up front: Fisher & Paykel and Asko. If you own one, I'll point you toward someone who specializes in them — that's more honest than learning on your dime.
Here's how I decide whether your appliance is worth fixing — and I'll walk you through it on every job:
One thing worth understanding: the parts around a repair have aged right along with the broken one. I'll be straight with you about when a fix makes sense and when you're better off putting that money toward new.
My rule: if the repair doesn't exceed one-third of the price of buying new, it's usually worth fixing — as long as the appliance is in decent shape overall. If replacement is the smarter call, I'll say so and recommend the brands I'd buy for my own home.
Make sure the appliance has power, and make sure the water is on — for a washing machine or dishwasher, for example. Those two checks save a surprising number of service calls.
It's better to stop using it and call as soon as possible. Sometimes unplugging it or disconnecting the power is a good idea so you don't further damage the equipment.
Yes — Sub-Zero, Thermador, and True, along with the major standard brands. Two brands I avoid: Fisher & Paykel and Asko. I'd rather tell you up front than waste your time.
One-stop shop: I hold both a C-20 HVAC contractor license and a BEAR appliance repair license. If I've already earned your trust on your AC or furnace, you know what you're getting on your appliances too.
